Documenting an exhibition is far more than photographing the space and the installation. My aim is to document the experience of the exhibition with a series of images, typically a few wide-angle master images, then groups of works and single works. The focus is on curation, on the dialog of works presented together and their presence in the particular space.
As I shoot I reflect on defining the displayed objects, exhibition concept, exhibition design, lighting, typology and other elements of the show and document the exhibition in a way that would not only photograph it, but also represent it to future audiences.
Photographing events such as private views, studio visits, publication launches, public art, etc., is done with your briefing in mind, capturing every key moment of the event.
There are two main visual styles to choose from.
- First is a candid style where I photograph the event non-intrusively, focusing on the mood, interaction with the works, even in low lighting conditions. With this style I provide details and wide-angle shots showing the space, the artworks, as well as the audience.
- Secondly, a ‘red-carpet’ style where I am using a flashlight and a diffuser and I take posed images of guests.
Most times I advise on a portfolio of images in both styles taken simultaneously throughout the event.
An Instagram takeover is also possible, where I post images, videos and stories live on your behalf, with pre-determined captions and hashtags.
Photographing artworks. Original works can be photographed on display at the gallery or museum, in storage facilities and in private properties such as artists’ studios and client’s or dealer’s houses.
Performance art is documented from start to finish with special attention given to any specific moments the artist or client wishes to capture. I pay attention to various aspects of the performance such as artist(s), lighting, music, audience experience, interaction and so on, in a non-invasive manner.
Artist portraiture. Photographing artists, gallery directors, collectors, gallery personnel and teams in a collaborative process being mindful of expression, composition, lighting and background. I always try to photograph artists in an artistic way, so their aura would show in the images.
Videography. These videos will be short and concise, around 1 minute, which is enough time to explain your message and showcase your project.
