Over the moon that my work, The Ceiling In The Sky, was chosen for the Chiswick W4th Plinth, following in the footsteps of Sir Peter Blake as the second artwork selected for the programme. Inspired by the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, the W4th Plinth is Abundance London’s rolling programme of temporary public art, running since September 2019. Every six months, a new 4×4m artwork takes over the TfL brick wall on the railway embankment at Turnham Green Terrace. Works are shortlisted by Abundance London and then chosen by public vote, turning a familiar corner of the city into a shared, open-air gallery. The programme launched with Sir Peter Blake’s joyful collage of music hall entertainers at the Empire Theatre, and on 23 April 2023 my work was unveiled as the winning artwork for the W4th Plinth.
Having Dame Siân Phillips unveil the work was one of those pinch me moments. She’s a true legend and her presence gave the whole unveiling a special kind of weight and warmth. I also felt a little tenderness knowing her connection to Peter O’Toole, and that they shared the screen in Goodbye, Mr. Chips... a film I love and still remember watching as a teenager.
Thank you to everyone who came, and thank you for sending these photos. They’re wonderful memories to have and to cherish.
I’m deeply grateful to everyone involved in this project, their care and effort go far beyond what I can properly put into words.
A heartfelt thank you to Abundance London for making it possible for my artwork, The Ceiling In The Sky, to be shown at such a monumental scale , 4 × 4 metres, and shared with such a wide public audience.
CRISTINA SCHEK WINNER OF THE CHISWICK W4TH PLINTH
"We are delighted to announce that ‘The Ceiling in the Sky’ by Cristina Schek has been unveiled by Dame Siân Phillips as the new W4th Plinth. Borrowed from the Fourth Plinth concept in Trafalgar Square, The Chiswick W4th Plinth is a rolling programme of temporary public art curated by Abundance London since September 2019. The first artwork to be displayed was a collage of music hall entertainers at the Empire Theatre, by artist Sir Peter Blake, a long time Chiswick resident.
Abundance London, who organise the choice and delivery of the community art works, received nearly 500 submissions from artists to show their work this time, which the jury whittled down to just 15. The 12 which met the technical requirements for the space were put to a public vote. "We had thousands of votes for the W4th Plinth a fitting response as we had so many hundreds of submissions, and we are very excited about our winner." the judges said. Find out more here.
Together, these two pieces 'The Ceiling In The Sky' and 'The Ceiling In The Skyscrapers' form a harmonious narrative that transcends time and space, bridging the natural and urban landscapes through my Surreal lens.
With this artwork we go back in time to that pure, wild wood that will eventually be urbanised and populated by some of the greatest creative minds in history. Within the canopy of the forest, we can see projections of their future imaginations. This is the fertile forest floor from where the creations of many artists could grow tall and strong, reaching up to the sky.
If you wish to acquire a limited edition print of 'The Ceiling In The Sky', they are available through Cynthia Corbett Gallery, please contact Gallery Founder & Director Cynthia Corbett at sales@thecynthiacorbettgallery.com
In the second piece of this series we shift our gaze to the bustling financial district, a landscape dominated by towering skyscrapers. Here, the urban jungle stands in stark contrast to the untamed wilderness of the first artwork, 'The Ceiling in the Sky'. As we explore the city skyline, we witness the convergence of architectural marvels that symbolize the growth and development of human ingenuity. Mirroring the organic beginnings of the wild wood in the first artwork, while 'The Ceiling in the Skyscrapers' portrays a contemporary manifestation of creativity and determination. Among the concrete and steel, glimpses of the imaginative projections of visionary minds come to life, echoing the fertile, forest floor where innovative concepts take root and ascend to new heights.
